How to Lay Granite Cobbles: Base, Bedding and Joints

Granite is close to inert against abrasion and moisture. So when a cobbled surface goes wrong, it is almost never the stone — it is the build-up beneath it or the restraint around it.

1. The sub-base carries the load

Excavate to a formation that is firm and evenly compacted, then build the sub-base in layers rather than one lift. Depth follows the traffic: a garden path and a service yard sit on very different foundations. Get this wrong and no thickness of granite will save the surface.

2. The bedding layer sets the level

Cobbles are bedded, screeded to a consistent depth, and never packed individually to make up for variation in the stone. This is precisely why calibration matters: cobbles that vary in thickness force the layer to correct each one by hand, slowly, at the client's cost.

3. Edge restraint is not optional

Every laying pattern relies on being held at its perimeter. Without a restrained edge the field creeps outward under traffic, joints open, and the interlock that herringbone was chosen for stops working. Detail the edge on the drawing — a kerb, an edging course, a haunched channel — before the first cobble is set.

4. The joint is part of the design

  • Keep joint width consistent. An even 8–10mm joint reads as craftsmanship; a wandering one reads as haste, from across the garden.
  • Fill fully. A joint filled to the top transfers load between cobbles — that is what makes the surface behave as one plane.
  • More joint length means faster drainage and better grip underfoot when wet, which is why herringbone and weave patterns suit surfaces that get rained on.
  • Top the filler up once in the first year as it settles. After that it is very nearly maintenance-free.

5. Lay from a pattern, not from a pile

We dry-lay the chosen pattern in our own yard, check it for tolerance and shade, then mesh and crate it in that arrangement. What reaches site is a pattern ready to set. Share the programme early and the pallets arrive in laying sequence, which is worth more to a site foreman than anything else on this list.

The lifespan of a granite surface is mostly a question of how well it was laid, not what it was laid with.Yorviaa Global Granitos

Ask for a one-metre sample panel, laid in the actual pattern and seen wet and dry. It settles more arguments than any amount of drawing.
