Most people choose a laying pattern by eye. That works — but there is a structural argument underneath the visual one, and it is worth knowing before the drawing is fixed.
Start with the load
Herringbone, at either 45° or 90°, is the strongest of the eight. Every cobble is restrained by its neighbours in two directions at once, so a braking or turning wheel cannot walk the units out of line. If the surface takes vehicles, start here and let aesthetics choose between the two angles.
Royal Grid is the opposite case. A true stack bond has continuous joints running in both directions, which is exactly why it looks so architectural — and exactly why it belongs on terraces and pedestrian courts rather than under a delivery vehicle.
Then look at the shape of the space
- Yorviaa Classic is the quietest field of the eight, and takes an irregular boundary most gracefully — courtyards, garden terraces, and drives that are not simple rectangles.
- Stone Matrix laid across the line of travel makes a narrow walkway read wider than it measures — useful on side returns and coastal paths.
- Imperial Weave and Yorviaa Swastik hold a large open field together; both give the eye a module to rest on where a plain bond would look endless.
- Regal Fusion blends two sizes, so a long run never falls into a repeat you can trace with a finger.
Finally, the joint
Patterns with more joint length per square metre — herringbone, weave, swastik — drain faster and grip better underfoot when wet. Patterns with less — classic, grid — read calmer and quieter. Neither is better. They are answers to different questions.
